General Information The name "Aloe Vera", Latin for "true aloe", was probably given to this particular species of the aloe plant because it is reputed to be the most medicinally beneficial and therapeutic.
The active ingredients, obtained from the gel of an aloe vera leaf, are grouped together under the term Aloin. Aloin's complex and varied make-up is responsible for its ability to treat a wide range of disorders. One enzyme acts against the destructive elements present around a wound or bruise, for example, while another is able to break down inflammations.
Aloe Vera has been used for centuries as a laxative. The Aloe Vera juice is found to be beneficial in dealing with many digestive ailments.
Studies have indicated that Aloe Vera contains Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Calcium, Phosphorus, Glucose, Protein, Triglycerides, Magnesium and Zinc. The protein in Aloe Vera contains eighteen of the twenty amino acids found in the human body.
Aloe Vera also has several distinct healing properties. It has the ability to kill certain bacteria, fungi and viruses. It also has the ability to dilate capillaries, which increases the blood supply in the area to which it is applied.
Aloe Vera's application as a moisturizer is very well-documented. Its high water and mineral content make it ideal for use in skin creams and sun tan lotions. It has been used to break down callouses and blisters very effectively.
Please note: Diabetics may develop an intolerance to Aloe Vera juice and it is suggested that they do not take it.
