General Information
Spirulina is one of the most concentrated sources of pure food and nutrition in the universe having over 100 synergistic nutrients. It is approximately 65% to 70% complete protein with all the essential amino acids in perfect balance and, having no cellular wall in its make-up, is easily digestible. Spirulina contains the 8 amino acids, which the body cannot manufacture and which are, in turn, required to manufacture the 22 amino acids which form a complete protein. It is also rich in vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It is the highest known natural source, and one of the few plant sources, of Vitamin B12 (gram for gram 2,5 times higher than liver). Spirulina is also one of the few known sources of Gamma-linolenic Acid (GLA). This is usually formed naturally in our bodies from Linoleic Acid (but because of Western dietary habits is deficient) and is a vital element in a healthy metabolism. Gram for gram Spirulina has the same amount of calcium as milk. A teaspoon of spirulina has the same amount of vitamin A as 3 carrots, 1,5 times the iron as a 115 gm (4 oz) sirloin steak and contains 22 times less cholesterol than an egg. Spirulina has an abundance of amino acids, which include Phenylalanine, which naturally triggers the release of the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) in the body. We term CCK the `satiety hormone' as it is released naturally in the body when one has eaten one's fill. Spirulina, taken 30 minutes before a meal, will curb your appetite. Arginine another amino acid present in Spirulina assists with the regenerative processes in the body. Arginine releases growth hormones, which help break down fat cells and contribute to building muscle. The easily digestible protein in Spirulina keeps our blood sugar level constant reducing the craving for sweets and fizzy drinks. The single most contributory factor to weight gain from eating food is fat. Fat is found in all protein foods. Spirulina is only 7% fat. Its high protein content allows a person to follow a low-fat diet yet receive all the nutrient benefits of protein. Although in use centuries ago, since its 'rediscovery' in the sixties, Spirulina has been thoroughly researched - probably more than any other singular food source. This has given rise to claims of astounding therapeutic efficacy with astonishing clinical examples of success with many of the problem health disorders of our times. In Japan, Spirulina has become a way of life, a true health food for the modern age. Because of its protein content and easy assimilation Spirulina can easily be called an energy food.
